Whole-House Filtration for Ocala Homes

A filter at the main line treats every tap. What it should remove depends on whether you're on city water or a well.

A whole-house water filter typically costs $1,129–$3,541 installed (HomeAdvisor). On City of Ocala water, the common goals are chlorine taste (a 1.21 ppm annual average in 2025) and PFAS, which the city's report lists from 2024 sampling. On a well, filters target sediment, odor and iron.

City water: chlorine

Ocala chlorinates its water to control microbes. The 2025 report lists a running annual average of 1.21 ppm, with single results from 0.75 to 1.36 ppm, under the 4.0 ppm limit. Activated carbon at the main line removes most of the chlorine taste and smell at every faucet and shower.

What the city reports on PFAS

PFAS are long-lasting manufactured chemicals used in stain-, grease- and water-resistant products and some firefighting foams. The City of Ocala's 2025 report lists results from federal UCMR 5 sampling taken January to July 2024, at the point of entry: PFOS at 39 ng/L, PFHxS at 42 ng/L and PFOA at 6.5 ng/L, among others. The city states that it is developing solutions to comply with EPA's PFAS regulations by the EPA deadline of 2032, and notes EPA's figure of 4 ng/L for PFOS and PFOA.

If you'd like to reduce PFAS at home in the meantime, choose a carbon filter or RO unit whose NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 listing includes PFOA and PFOS, and keep up with media changes.

Well water: sediment, odor, iron

On a private well, a sediment stage protects everything downstream. FDOH lists adsorption on activated carbon among the ways to remove odor compounds, with aeration and oxidation for heavier sulfur and iron problems. Carbon won't soften water or kill bacteria, so a well system often pairs it with other stages. Compare configurations on the Ocala cost page.

Picking a design

Two designs dominate. A backwashing media tank has the higher purchase price, rinses itself on a timer and can go years between media changes. A cartridge system has the lower purchase price, but its cartridges get replaced far more frequently. Either way, size the filter to your home's peak flow so showers keep their pressure, and on a well, match it to the pump's output. When a softener is part of the plan, the filter usually goes in front.

Questions homeowners ask

Does a whole-house filter make city water safe?

The city's 2025 report lists no violations. A filter is a choice for taste, odor or extra PFAS reduction, not a fix for a failing supply.

How often do the filters need changing?

It depends on the design and your water use. Cartridge systems need new cartridges regularly; backwashing tanks go longer between media changes. Ask for the schedule and cost in writing.
